“The Essence of Love”

Nancy Lynn Mair, 68, of Platteville, Wisconsin, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, May 23, 2023, at University of Iowa Hospital after an eleven-day illness. Nancy was a devoted wife, soulmate, mother, and known as "Nana" to her grandchildren. Nancy spread love wherever she went. She was beautiful inside and out, and loved by everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. She was a sweet, kind, quiet, and gracious woman who melted hearts. Young women admired her as an exemplary role model. Nancy’s family and countless friends always described her as sweet, gentle, angelic. She never spoke an unkind word.

Nancy (Stockman) Mair was born in Edgerton, Wisconsin on July 27, 1954, the daughter of Westly and Jean Stockman. Nancy was raised in Milton, Wisconsin and graduated in 1972 from Milton Union High School. Nancy loved music, playing the clarinet in the school band. A gifted vocalist, she sang in Keynote Singers in high school and Koinonia Singers at Milton United Methodist Church.

Nancy met the love of her life, Mike Mair, at Nino’s Steak House on May 2nd, 1975, in Janesville, Wisconsin. Nancy worked at Milton Data Center and was enjoying a night out with her co-workers. Mike’s band “Shiloh” was the live music that night. Mike fixed his gaze on the most beautiful woman he had ever seen, who would later become his wife. Mike soon nicknamed Nancy “Sunshine.” Nancy and Mike were engaged on her 23rd birthday, July 27, 1977. They were married on April 1, 1978, at Milton United Methodist Church.

Nancy soon joined Mike in Platteville where she was employed by Cardin’s Pharmacy (1979-1995). Nancy yearned to be in health care and earned her degree as a Certified Medical Assistant in 1996, graduating at the top of her Medical Assistant class at Southwest Wisconsin Technical College. Nancy was employed by Medical Associates Ophthalmology in Dubuque, Iowa. She was a Certified Contact Lens Assistant Technician from 1997 until her retirement in 2020. The Ophthalmology staff were the beneficiaries of Nancy’s passion for baking that produced an endless flow of baked goodies.

Nancy and Mike were known throughout the community of Platteville owning several businesses over the decades: The Fret Shop (1977-1980), Mound City Music (1980-1992), co-owners of Lifeline Audio Video Technologies (1993-2016) and owners of My Hearing Loop (2017-2021).

Nancy and Mike were members of Platteville United Methodist Church. Nancy, a gifted vocalist, sang in the church choir. Nancy and Mike formed the first praise band in 1995 with Nancy’s sweet soprano voice singing nearly every Sunday until late 2021. Nancy was instrumental in starting the Wednesday evening “Alive” rock-n-roll worship service in the fall of 2022. Nancy loved mentoring the young Alive band members and they loved her.

Nancy was the newest member of the Philanthropist Educators Association (PEO) of Platteville and loved her PEO sisters. They will miss Nancy’s smile and dedication.
