Kenneth R. Voltz, F1 (FCR)
Photo of Kenneth R. Voltz, F1 (FCR) who served aboard Mississinewa was kindly shared with us by his nephew, Mr. Harold Voltz. The photo was Kenneth's High School yearbook photo, taken just before he entered the Navy.
Voltz was wounded in the sinking and was treated aboard the hospital ship, Samaritan. Later, he was transferred to the Wichita for the ride home. Voltz had (possibly the sole) distinction of later, after survivor's leave, being re-assigned to Wichita and actually go back to Ulithi during the invasion of Okinawa. The following March, he was again transferred to the USS Boston.
Like many other Miss sailors, other Voltz family members served in the Armed Services during WWII. Harold, Kenneth's brother, was a reconnaissance scout with the 4th Armored / 25th Cavalry and his other brother, Donald, served with the 102nd Inf. Div. (Ozark) Headquarters Battery 927th Field Artillery Battalion.
Thank you Mr. Voltz, for sharing this part of your family's history with us.
